After graduation from YoHi I attended the U.S. Naval Academy graduating in 1969.  I was designated a Naval aviator and helicopter pilot in December 1970.  I served in Vietnam as a (UH-1) helicopter gunship pilot in 1971 and 1972.

Following a tour as flight instructor in Pensacola I reported to a vertical replenishment squadron in San Diego flying H-46 helicopters with a couple of Westpac deployments.  I attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey from 1977 to 1979 earning a Master's Degree in Computer Science.  Following NPS I reported another H-46 squadron in Norfolk with one deployment to the Mediterranean in 1981.  Next I served aboard the USS Inchon (LPH-12) with a very long deployment to the Med and Lebanon in late 1982 and early 1983.  Following this Med deployment I returned to Monterey in 1983 for tours at NPS and then the Fleet Numerical Oceanography Center where I retired from the Navy in June 1989.

For the next 21 years I was employed by the Defense Manpower Data Center In Monterey as an data analyst, project leader, and Division Chief.  These 21 years involved a great deal of travel for overseas' projects related to evacuation tracking systems and a biometric identification system for base access.  These trips took me to Thailand, Korea, Japan (where I visited the Yokosuka YoHi a couple of times), Italy, Germany, Kuwait, and Qatar.  My final overseas posting was from July to October in 2005 for the Joint Staff working in all Iraq's interesting destinations including Baghdad, Mosul, Fallujah, and Ramadi.  This project involved a force protection system to enhance base security.

After 46 years working for the Department of Defense (in uniform and as civilian) I retired from DMDC in February 2010.  I have found the transition a very easy one and I have not looked back.  Needless to say, living in Monterey has given me access to many great golf courses which is my primary day to day activity. I have discovered fly fishing in northern California and pheasant hunting in South Dakota every fall.

I was married from 1969 to 1974 and had two children, Jennifer (1970) and Michael (1973).  I remarried in 1976 while stationed in San Diego to my wife, Denise.  We have a daughter, Stephanie (1979).  All three children are happily married and I have five grandchildren (two boys and three girls) with another granddaughter due in October.

When Denise and I left Monterey in 1979 our shared goal was to return to this special place.  We have been here since 1983 so Monterey is truly my home.  In fact, we have been in the same house in Pebble Beach for over 30 years.  Three years ago we bought a second house in Merced, California to be near to Stephanie and her family.  Two years ago Denise retired from local school districts following a 31 year career as a Speech Pathologist.
